Welcome to Southwestern Pacific Regional OBIS Node

The Southwestern Pacific Regional OBIS Node is a work in progress. It will contain marine biodiversity data and metadata (including algae, invertebrates, fish, birds and mammals) from the seas around New Zealand, the Ross Sea, Southern Ocean and waters north to around Fiji. Many of the data are from a range of marine surveys carried out by NIWA and the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries.

You can use textual searching or map-based tools to display marine biodata and map the points where they were collected.

This Southwestern Pacific Regional OBIS Node provides different ways to search for biodata: choose a predefined search from a list of common searches; use the map view to draw a box on a map and search for biodata; or create your own search for maximum search flexibility.

You will also be able to look at metadata that provide high-level descriptions of the biodiversity data and to generate predefined reports that access the data. Most of the data are publicly visible — to see private data you will need to arrange for a log in.

This information system is offered as publicly available resource, to facilitate access to a well-maintained long-term marine data repository. If you have good-quality marine biodata from New Zealand that you would like to be included in this Southwestern Pacific Regional OBIS Node, please contact us.

Synoptic NZ marine species maps are also available on the NZ Ministry of Fisheries website at at https://www.nabis.govt.nz.
